"Ripper's" impact on society

After looking at the videos in yesterday's lecture it was obvious that Jack the Ripper represented someone from the middle or upper class because of his image in each video we saw.E.g hat, cloak and doctors bag. The public were afraid of this serial killer but what got me thinking is that could the ripper in a sense be representing the power and control that the upper class has over the lower or working class.I thought that the ripper could be a representation of the more dominant class at that time.Another thing that struck me was that the newspapers were also so involved in creating this fear and in a way helping the "Ripper's" ( upper class's) position in allowing him to have a control on society by being feared by the public.

yes i agree with how he shows his power over the lower class and seen as all his attacks were among prostitutes coming from the lower class shows this power. However, he himself maybe could have came from a lower class background himself but to add to his disguise he could be posing as one from the higher class. In all of the videos we watched he was always portrayed as the same type of character, eg the cloak, hat, doctors bag etc. The newspapers also helped the Ripper in a sense as the more publicity he had the more he probably wished to murder, gaining this fear in the society at the time.

I agree with the aspect concerning power and control. In fact i think that power and control could possibly be the motive for the killings. i mean jack the ripper not only killed but he mutliate the women leaving behind no indication of who he or she was. i would however say that Jack the ripper could have come from the lower classes as well as the upper classes because lets face it you don't have to be educated to kill and the skills shown vis mulitation resemble a butcher as well as a doctor or midwife. Assuming he or she was from the upper class is a stong possinlity but not concrete. i don't think we will ever know who he was.
