final blog

hi guys hope every one's good first of all i just want to say what a pleasure it has been working with everyone.I think we worked very well as a group and I am happy to have had the chance to work with you all.Everyone put effort and their bit into our presentation.I know all of us are thinking that the actual presentation did not go as well as we want it to and that we wanted the audience to participate more and the reaction from our class was not what we expect it to be.But i do not think that reflects on our enthusiasm or work we put in.I personally think from our side we did everything to make our presentation interesting and we all put a lot of effort into it.Although some things did not turn out the way we wanted them to overall i am very pleased with the entire group and the work we put in, and i do think it showed when we did our presentation that we were fully prepared.I hope i get the chance to work with you guys again!

Presentation

Hi everyone,
i hope everyone is ok. I've just read the blogs and i don't think we are giving outselves enough credit i mean yeah the aundience could have took part a lot better but thats not down to us. I thonk we all worked hard and put so much effoer in and i think that refeclect out presentation. i mean htere is no way we can loose marks for research or team work.

It was great working with you all and i think we'll get a decent grade especially with all the blogs, with this one we have 53 i think.

I agree there may have been too many questions but then again if the audience was more pumped up then we would probably think different. Plus it was a bit of a knock that meena didin't seem that interested and stopped playing the game after 3 questions. we put so much effort so a little support wouldn't have gone a miss.

Anyway overall the presention i think was good and original i mean we didnt just stand and talk we used weblink, books and a quiz to prove our point and include the audience. it was great.

Hope everyone has a good Christmas .

mixed feelings!!!!

Hi all. Well what can I say really but part from thankyou to you all for constructing a fab presentation. After presenting it to the rest of the class, well what few were there, i am fairly disappointed. I think we all did great, but the audience didnt seem to be interested in our presentation whatsoever. This did annoy me a little as we all seemed to show enthusiasm to the group before us so why couldnt they be enthusiastic towards ours?? O well. I do think maybe there were just a few too many questions like what Dehan Jo stated, which may have started to bored our audience but like all of the presentations, it only ran 15mins. I just wish the class would have seemed more enthusiastic about participating with the questions and answering them but instead they all seemed bored- well to be fair it was around 9. Also, yes Gemma you are correct in saying that our links did work when we first set up our presentation as we opened them all made sure they would load quick. However, having to close all of our presntation down and not go first threw us. Therefore i hope to god we dont get marked down for not having the links open up fast as technically it was not our fault. Anyway we all tried our best, didnt just read off the powerpoint and we 100% interacted with our audience so hopefully we will have got a good grade. Have a great christmas all and a happy new year. I have extremely enjoyed working with you all as none of you were slackers. We all participated just as much as any other and worked well as a group. Hopefully we will meet up again as i would definatly work with you guys again. xxx

The presentation.....

I for one think that the presentation went really well, we managed to use the game to prove our point and also get across what 'Ripperology' really does mean. The only criticism i have is that i believe that we had a few to many questions (however i did say this when we were constructing the questions) and i feel that a few memebers of the class began to tire of all of the questions. Although this was the case they still participated and we should all be very grateful for that. Another thing is that we did manage to disprove some of the things in the presentation that was just after ours. Im not sure if anyone else noticed but one of the girls was about to say Jack the Ripper and his whitechapel murders (as if he was responsible for all of them) however she changed her sentence at the last minute and i think thats because we had already let the class know that he wasnt responsible for them HE WAS PART OF THEM!!.
Overall i really enjoyed the presentation and i enjoyed all of the preparation and research that we have put into it. You have all been a great bunch to work with and hopefully we will all gain very good grades from this module
thankyou and have a great christmas x x

Presentation Analysis

I have enjoyed working with a great group of girls, all of which have contributed a great deal to the final presentation.
I am slightly disappointed by the response our presentation received. I know it was early and the room was pretty cold but I still feel that, due to the amount of work put into the presentation, it should have rocked! I am the first to admit that the presentation presented before ours was absolutely fantastic and a very hard act to follow, well done ladies, and this probably detracted from ours.
I also feel that the technology let us down, through no fault of our own as we has arrived in plenty of time to cue up our links ready for the presentation.
Finally I am worried that the errors on the hand in may detract from our final mark and would have liked the opportunity to make a few simple corrections.
Having got the poor aspects off my chest I do feel that there are several positive aspects as well;
the aims raised in our presentation were all addressed and our point was made in an original manor. The use of our props in the fact v myth game kept our audience's attention and ensured their participation in the presentation. The information given was accurate and concise allowing an easy understanding of Ripperology and the facts connected to the Ripper murders.
Finally, how would I improve on the presentation?
Although improvements could be made I don't think I would change the content or presentation method. The planning for the presentation was well researched, equally distributed between group members and on target.
I have the advantage of having taken part in a different module presentation earlier this week. When comparing the two I do feel the Ripper was better prepared, but my Popular Texts was better received.
Hiya Girls,
It's all over : ( I think the general view from us all is disappointment. I think the overall presentation went well though, we were all confident and clear and got our messages across. The game, which we were looking forward to, didn't go as well as planned, it was like the audience just weren't interested and didn't want to take part, but we tried at least.
It was ashame the web links messed up, but that wasn't our fault, we did have them sorted at nine o'clock.
The overall group project has gone really well I think. We've worked well together and found out alot of information. Our sessions were fun and I really enjoyed them.

here's a great quote we can use on our form for Mark. I think it sums up our Ripperology ideas about the influence of fiction over the facts of the crimes;

"Over the years the mystery has deepened to the degree that the truth is almost totally obscured. Innumerable press stories, pamphlets, books, plays, films, and even musicals have dramatised and distorted the facts to such a degree that the fiction is publicly accepted more than the reality."

Presenatation

Hey guys hope your all good I was just going through all my notes and research for the conclusion that Sam and I are doing for our presentation.I have done a bit more research so hopefully we have enough time to fit everything in.We have worked well as a group and got together so much information and research I just hope we will be able to fit it all in our presentation .Tomorrow will be a an opportunity for us to get a run through and maybe do our transcript or cue cards and also time ourselves.Anyway see you all tomorrow for the run through.

the whitechaple murders

as mentioned the other day in our meeting evidence of all of the Whitechaple murders and their connection with jack the ripper
What has to be understood is the fact that the 'Ripper' murders and the 'Whitechapel murders' are not the same thing, although the latter does include the 'Ripper' murders. So to set the scene, the list of the eleven Whitechapel murders, (all of which at some stage have been looked upon as 'Ripper' murders), was as follows:

  1. Tuesday 3 April 1888
    Emma Elizabeth Smith
Assaulted and robbed in Osborn Street, Whitechapel.
  2. Tuesday 7 August 1888
    Martha Tabram
    George Yard Buildings,George Yard, Whitechapel.
  3. Friday 31 August 1888
    Mary Ann Nichols
    Buck's Row, Whitechapel,
  4. Saturday 8 September 1888
    Annie Chapman
Rear Yard at 29 Hanbury Street,Spitalfields.
  5. Sunday 30 September 1888
    Elizabeth Stride
Yard at side of 40 Berner Street, St Georges-in-the- East.
  6. Sunday 30 September 1888
    Catherine Eddowes
Mitre Square, Aldgate, City of London.
  7. Friday 9 November 1888
    Mary Jane Kelly
    13 Miller's Court, 26 Dorset Street Spitalfields.
  8. Thursday 20 December 1888
    Rose Mylett
    Clarke's Yard, High Street. Poplar.
  9. Wednesday 17 July 1889
    Alice McKenzie
    Castle Alley, Whitechapel.
  10. Tuesday 10 September 1889
    Unknown female torso
Found under railway arch in Pinchin Street, Whitechapel,
  11. Friday 13 February 1891
    Frances Coles
Under railway arch, Swallow Gardens, Whitechapel

Throat cutting attended the murders of Nichols, Chapman, Stride, Eddowes, Kelly, McKenzie and Coles. In all except the cases of Stride and Mylett there was abdominal mutilation. In the case of Chapman the uterus was taken away by the killer; Eddowes' uterus and left kidney were taken; and in Kelly's case, evidence suggests, the heart.

this shows how jack was connected to the Whitechapple murders but not responsible for all of them!

Hi guys,

How is everyone. I just read through some of the blogs and i think everyone is looking forward to thursday.

I think the game will interest everyone and no one will do the same I bet.
Oh i've just accessed the presentation and have made a wrote up some specifics for the conclusion off wolf so i think i've gor everything i need for the runthrough on Wednesday although i will be a little late because of my lecture.
Hope everyone had a good weekend
Hi guys!
I’m really looking forward to the presentation this Thursday; we’ve put a lot of work into it and I think it will show. As a group we’ve worked really well together and found a lot of interesting information; whether it’s true or false! The slide show looks great, and I think we have enough work. It will be good to have a run through on Thursday just so we, ourselves, can see how it’s going to run. I’ll see you all Wednesday x

presentation preperation update!

I have produced a set of cards with both the question and information about the "fact" revealed these we can share out between us so that we have an equal amount to say. I have also finished printing our knives and bags just got to laminate them! I have read through the presentation and I don't think it needs any tweaking! We are introducing our subject and aims well and through the game are proving our point about Ripperology being part of popular media. I am looking forward to our run through on Wednesday. see you there!
I have also found some quotes from the two books I have and referenced them for our form for mark I will bring them on Wednesday. We can fill the form in ready for Thursday.
finally, thanks for having a go at using the joint presentation tool in google. Sorry it didn't work too well! I am not the greatest at this modern technology stuff!

Hi everyone

Sorry it took a while to write on the blog but the room is booked for 1pm untill 3pm room MD108 on Wednesday.
Hi all.

Im really looking forward to presenting our presentation on thurs, it is going to be soooo good. I do think on wed when we meet up, we have definatly got to time it however, as i do think it may run over, not by very much however. Theresa, we also are going to have to sort out a few cue cards so we can say why the statments are false, to back up our ideas. But apart from that, i d think we are going to be great. Btw could someone tell me, have we got a room booked for wed? Think Sam mentioned she was going to book the same room again that we were in yesterday. Thanks x

I was just looking at the London walks site and it gives some information about the press coverage.

"Although Jack the Ripper was not the world’s first serial killer, he was certainly its first media murderer. His crimes took place in an era when literacy amongst the general populace was increasing and the press at large was very much a catalyst for social change. Articles about the murders appeared in the newspapers on a daily basis and fostered a general fascination that, at times, bordered on hysteria. Indeed, the very name “Jack the Ripper” was probably the invention of a journalist and it was press coverage that helped turn the murders into a phenomenon and transformed a sordid back street killer into an international legend."

Thursday, 27 November 2008

Hi guy,

Just to let you know we are booked into room MD108 11-1 next thursday to put together our presentation.

Suspects

Hi again. Have found an extremely useful website about the suspects which was postged 21t october, 2008 so an up to date bit of information. Don't know if it wil be of anyuse.

http://criminals-outlaws.suite101.com/article.cfm/jack_the_ripper_suspects
Hey All!
Have been thinking about the questions in which we could use in our presentation and was wondering if you thought they were of any use. Firstly i thought we could base 3 or 4 questions on the women themselves who were victims- like names, where they happened? All on streets? When they happened etc you get my drift here. Then i thought we could do a few questions on jack the ripper himself. We could ask the audience a question based on who Jack the Ripper actually is and get them to choose between 2 of the suspects- even though we dont know and no answer would be correct, we could still get them to choose. Then at the end we could say in actual fact there is no actual suspect who has been defined as Jack the Ripper. This could show how people still are thinking about The ripper. People identify Jack The Ripper with certain icons and props so could do a question based around this also. What do you guys think? I decided not to post any more information on here because to be fair, we have got loads already- i mean 31 posts. By the way, Theresa- i loved those cut out/props, think they will work really well. So this week i am going to come up with a few questions just draft ones for you all to look at next week when we meet up. Please someone post the room for me which you booked. Thanks and see you all next week.
Hi guys i just read through this weeks posts and there great. the info on the copy cat killer can be used to to show how ripperology is still thriving in todays society.

I just ckeched my email and we are doing our presentation in week 12 at 9am. so we can meet in week 11 to put everything together. I jsut hope we don't get people walking in Half way through.

I've been working some of the conclusion from the points we agreed and i think its ok oh an i think its a brilliant idea to use images in fact the images will help show that jack the ripper has loads of different personas which makes him appear fictional. Aslo it shows how Jack the ripper is continually re packaged to encourage and maintain society's interest in he or she although i've a bit disappointed that there is little info or pictures on a female jack the ripper i mean its possible that Jack the ripper was female, i suppose that is a point we could raise in the presentation.

ok i just found think the closest image we can get to a female jack the rippper. There was a film called DR. Jekyll and Sister Hyde where the doctor turned into a female and killed people although this was based on kekyll and hyde. although they killed women in particular.

oh just found ome more infor on a female jack the ripper. the link is below:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/Jack-the-Ripper-may-have-been-female/2006/05/17/1147545371933.html

it states that "technology developed in Australia has tested 118-year-old DNA the notorious serial killer may have left behind and built a partial female profile." i'll bring the infor to lecture

Wednesday, 26 November 2008

Last weeks lecture was absolubtly brilliant, im so glad that we have all of the final ideas for our presentation. Up until week 11 we can focus on our particular parts of the presentation and get all of our pieces of research together. Just to remind everybody....Please keep hold of the pictures etc because they will do wonders for our presentation i think. We do all love visual aids!!!

This part is directly to Gemma:
Since we are responsibe for doing the whole definition of ripperology i thought it might be a nice idea to come up with a few. They all seem to tie in to the same thing but we could come up with an academic definition and then an everyday definition using the knowledge of 'what ripperology is' that we have gained over the past couple of week. I think this would be good becuse it can tie in with the 2nd part of the presentation which will remind the audience that everybody knows something about this subject. And the fact of the matter is....we have all become 'RIPPEROLOGIST' during the time we have been in this work group!

Let me know what you think???

Ripper Research cont.....

Thursdays lecture was really good! Its amazing to see just how many television programmes have used Jack to up their ratings!
I have been looking for some iformation about the copt cat murders that Mark refered to in the lecture and Imanaged to find the following article:
Ripper copycat is found guilty of murder
Derek Brown, a convicted sex attacker who sought notoriety, will spend a minimum of 30 years in jail.
A convicted sex attacker who wanted to become a serial killer was jailed for life at the Old Bailey today for the murders of two women.
Derek Brown, 48, was found guilty of the murders of Xiao Mei Guo, 29, a DVD seller, and Bonnie Barrett, 24, a sex worker, whom he picked up in Whitechapel, east London. Both were young mothers.
Police believe Brown, a newspaper delivery driver from Preston, Lancashire, was trying to emulate the serial killer Jack the Ripper. He had borrowed the book, Killers: The Most Barbaric Murderers of Our Time, from his local library as well as assembling a DIY murder kit, including a bow saw, a steam cleaner and waterproof sheeting.
A search of Brown's flat in Rotherhithe, south-east London, last October, revealed blood from the women in the kitchen, corridor and bathroom, where police suspect he may have dismembered the women.
the article appeared in every newspaper on 6th oct 2008.
follow the link for the full story!

I have also found out the title of the very first use of the murders as an influence in fiction.
The Curse Upon Mitre Square was the first piece of Ripper fiction (October 1888) and was originally published in the month-and-a-half period between the murders of Catherine Eddowes and Mary Kelly. (Mitre Square is where the body of Catherine Eddowes was found)

There is a link to the book at:
I'm amazed that the book was actually published DURING the murders!

link

forgot to post the link sorry. Its
www.casebook.org/victims

!!!!!!THE VICTIMS!!!!!!

After how well yesterdays lecturer went, i was on a right buzz as to research the details about the actual victims in order to come up with some great questions for our game. Here are some facts i found::

  • Mary Ann Nicholls was born August 26, 1845.
  • When she had died, her father commented on how she was nearly 44 years old but indeed she only looked about 30, so had a young face.
  • She was 5ft 2, had brown eyes and brown hair.
  • Also according to doctors notes, she was an alcoholic.

  • Annie Chapman was born September, 1841
  • She was 5ft tall and had blue eyes and brown wavvry hair.
  • She was under nourished and suffered from tuberculosis and was possibly dying at the time of her murder.
  • She was said to have a drinking problem but wasnt an alcoholic.

  • Elizabeth Stride was born 27th November, 1843
  • She died at the age of 45.
  • She had light gray eyes and curly dark brown hair.

  • Catherine Edows was born 14th April 1842

  • Was 5ft tall, had hazel eyes and dark auburn hair.

  • She also suffered from Bright's disease.

  • Mary Jane Kelly was aprox 25 years old when she died.
  • Was born in 1863
  • 5 ft 7, blonde hair blue eyes.

Looking at all of these facts, i found a few interesting ideas to point out. Firstly, all of the victims apart from Mary Kelly, had aweful teeth- some were missing, others were discoloured but nothing was mentioned about mary Kellys teeth however. Also, Mary Kelly was the youngest to be murdered and the only one to have blonde hair and blue eyes. So why was she so different to the other victims??
Just want to say thanks to all of you guys as i believe that we are all working as a team, haing a laugh as well as taking this presentation serious. In my opinion we are working great together. Keep up the good work xx

  • Yesterday’s lecture was really helpful to our presentation. The TV clips we saw showed what we wanted to present to our audience; the global assumptions of Jack the Ripper.
I think as a group were all working really well with each other. We have the confidence to talk to each other openly about whether or not we think ideas will work, although that hasn’t been a problem really as we’re all thinking of similar things. I’m really pleased with how well the group has worked together and how well everyone gets on, I would definitely work with all the girls again for future group work.
We managed to organise the actual layout of the presentation and know what everyone is focusing on and what they have to do for next week. By next week we should all be confident with what we are doing and have most of the information, which means the following week we can put it all to power point and have a run through of the whole thing.

    Presentation plan

    Hi guys,

Heres the presentation plan. I've just included what we discussed earlier today:

    1) Introduction: Gemma and Dehan-jo

    • Definition of Ripperology
    • How popular is it?
    • How the information is presented to the public - films, music, books (everyone knows something about Jack the Ripper)

    2) Main Section: Teri and Danni

    • Introduce game
    • True or false facts
    • collect results

    3) Conclusion: Nealo and Sam

    • What the results show
    • Link back to how we know the facts
    • Jack the Ripper continues to appear throughout the years - popular culture
    • List some programmes, books, newpapers past and present

if there are spelling mistakes let me know im hopeless some times

    Research

Hi guys i've just read through the blogs posted this week and it looks like we have all found the same book by Odell and uit looks like we have loads of information on facts surrounding the murrders. so i did some digging and found a website that studies Jack the ripper in a series of articles each focusing on different aspects of the case such as his identity, the police investigation, suspects, comparrisons to other killers etc. i've posted the link below.

When it comes to ripperology it seems to me that it is merely the continuos study of Jack the ripper by racking over the same facts trying to understand the motive and attemping to pin point who the murderer was.

I must admit im quite facinated with the reason as to why he is still around, why we are still as a society still Intrigued by him or her. I mean i camn understand why the victorian people were so facinated because prior to Jack the Ripper the was no killer like him, he was unique but in todays society we have had dozens of seriel killers so why is Jack the ripper, more than anty other, so famous and studied.

It appears to me that that jack the ripper is more famous for his lack of identity than his actual crimes but why?

Hope the website is of use.

    Presentation meeting and general research

I thought last weeks presentation meeting was a great start for our group I think we really got the basic things sorted and have a good foundation for our presentation.Just brain storming together and talking generally about Jack the Ripper helped us get started well.Anyway I have been doing some research on the Internet and I have come accross many websites giving a definition of Ripperology. One of the definitions are: Ripperology is defined as being the study of the infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper.( Urban Dictionary) http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Ripperology.

I have also came across a book by Robin Odell which I have mentioned before on the blog.It gives a definition of Ripperology and goes into detail about certain aspects of the ripper and Ripperology such as the rippers legacy, the measure of murder , questioning of the murders and why they happened. Not only that but the rippers victims.

    jack facts

    latest news report:

Files on Victorian lunatic throw new light on Jack the Ripper suspect
Medical records belonging to a Victorian mental patient suspected of being the serial killer Jack the Ripper have been made public.
By Alastair Jamieson Last Updated: 12:22PM GMT 19 Nov 2008 check out for the full story!

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/lawandorder/3482227/Files-on-Victorian-lunatic-throw-new-light-on-Jack-the-Ripper-suspect.html

Now back to business: The facts!!!!

    • Jack the Ripper was an alias for a killer who preyed on prostitutes

    • The murders occurred between 1888-1891, killings that terrorized London's East End

    • The drama played out in a 1-mile area around the district known as Whitechapel, part of City of London proper The killing spree was believed to be too much for the Whitechapel CID and Scotland Yard became involved, sending in reinforcement
    • Ripper victims possibly numbered 11 with a strong belief that actual Ripper casualties were about 5 women
    • The nature of the murders included throat slitting and abdominal mutilation. Surgeons who examined the bodies saw evidence of a degree of anatomical knowledge on the killer's part, which included clean cuts and exact excision.

    • The “Jack the Ripper” handle was derived from a mysterious letter that was sent to Central News Agency, and then forwarded on to the Metropolitan Police. The letter related that the author was “down on whores” and that he wouldn't cease “ripping them.”

    • Although there were a number of suspects in the case, eventually this was narrowed down to four contenders :
    1. Kosminski, a poor Polish Jew resident in Whitechapel

    2. Montague John Druitt, a 31 year old barrister and school teacher who committed suicide in December 1888

    3. Michael Ostrog, a Russian-born multi-pseudonymous thief and confidence trickster, believed to be 55 years old in 1888, and detained in asylums on several occasions

    4. Dr Francis J. Tumblety, 56 Years old, an American 'quack' doctor, who was arrested in November 1888 for offences of gross indecency, and fled the country later the same month, having obtained bail at a very high price.

    • The Ripper murders and the Whitechapel murders are not one and the same thing

    • The notoriety of the murders became international, with lurid accounts appearing in newspapers of the day

    • A female torso was discovered in the cellars of the new police building under construction at Whitehall

    • The chairman of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee received half a human kidney in a box accompanied by a letter “From Hell” that concluded: “Catch me when you can.” Was Jack taunting authorities?

    • The murders apparently ceased by 1891

    • In 1896, another “Jack the Ripper” letter surfaced, with corresponding press activity and speculation that the Ripper had returned

    • Immediately after the Eddowes murder a piece of her bloodstained apron was found in a doorway in Goulston Street, Whitechapel. Above the piece of apron, on the brick fascia in the doorway, was the legend, in chalk, "The Juwes are The men that Will not be Blamed for nothing." A message from the murderer, or simply anti-Semitic graffiti? Expert opinion is divided.

    • Prince Albert Victor (Eddy)
During the time of the Ripper murders, there were no actual theories presented linking Eddy to the crimes. Those would come much later after many of the principal characters in the theories were dead. It would not be until 1962 when the first theory regarding Eddy's involvement in the murders became known.

    • "Official UK government" archives which were originally marked "Secret..not to be opened until 1988"...............only to find that no further clues were forthcoming, and some information had mysteriously gone missing

    • The Oxford English Dictionary defines a ripperologist,-as " a student of the crimes of Jack the Ripper"

    What is Ripperology...?

Ive come across a 'so called' facts that an author cooked up over the years. There was only one book called 'ripperology' in the library so im sure we have all read it by now so im sorry if you have come across the same information as im about to tell you.
One theory that i havent heard before through previous research or in our jack the ripper workshop is the theory that the reason why he was killing these prostitutes was because he was avenging his sons venereal disease. The disease was supposedly given to his son by Mary Jane Kelly. In this theory 'Jack the ripper' is a doctor who's wife dies while giving birth to their son and so he devotes his life to his son. The doctor is upperclass and wealthy. Once his son dies of the disease he goes on a hunt to find Mary and kill her for what she has done.
This small theory covers a range of 'non-facts', such as:

    - Jack the ripper was a doctor
    - Jack the ripper had a son
    - Jack the ripper was wealthy
    - Jack the ripper was a man

One thing about this theory that does give it some merit is that the theory also goes on to say that while he searched for mary he interiigated other prostitutes. Once he got the info he wanted he silenced them with his knife. This explains a few things

    - Why there were murders before Mary
    - Why she seems to be the last murder
    - Why all of the other were on the street (he would have questioned them as he saw them?)
    - Why this murder was SO BRUTAL!!!

I conclude that 'Ripperology' Is taking small facts and adding it with whatever you want to create a theory that is ''believable''.

    What do you guys think??
Hi guys. After lots of searching on the real Jack the Ripper i came across a website which it called "The real Jack the Ripper," and its an online serial murder discussion. I thought this website was extremely influential as it has alot of information on the murders and who Jack the Ripper was also.

    http://www.fortunecity.com/roswell/streiber/273/realripper.htm

There are 5 accepted murders- which we all know.

Jack the Ripper's aim was to kil prostitutes by cutting their throats from left to right and finally mutilating their bodies. As he only commited his murders among prostitutes this shows that he had something against them. A hatred towards the way they live.

I also believe that in a sense, he could have been a doctor as all of his murders that he did, he seemed to know exactly what he was doing, like he had had some training on where to slice in the body.

There was a double murder on 30th September: Elizabeth Stride, and Catherine Eddows.

Maybe he wanted people not to discover himself but to discover the bodies of the dead women as there were no witnesses around to all of his murders and no clues, yet after he had done his deed, he left the bodies to be discovered. He didnt move them or hide them from the public.

The last murder was Marie Kelly. She was killed inside as police patrolled the east end streets by then and again he didnt want to get caught.

    Ripperolgy; Fact and fiction

Hi guys, Sorry for the delay on this information but here it is.
Ok just to prevent any risk of plagerism i'll give the full reference.
Odell, R (2006) Ripperology, Kent State University, Ohio

In the first section; The Murder Fact File 1888 the book give a brief summary of each of the murders the first being Mary Ann Nichols. it states the date and time she died (Friday 31st August at 3;40 am) the text also desrcibes the crime scene such as pisition of the body, who found the victim and gives a brief description of the multiation, the suspects, and information on the inquest).

the same information is given on page xx for Annie Chapman.b she died on saturday 8th september at 6 am at handbury street, spitalfields. further information shows that Ammie was found in a garden and there were2 prime suspects. Information on the inquest and mutliation were provided and also a jury's virdict on page xxi says the verdict was "willful murder against some person or persons unknown." this is the same verdict given by the jury's for all five of the murders.

The third victim was Elizabeth Stride was 45 and found in Berner Street at 1 am. like the other victims her throat was cut however there was no mutilation which was put down to the killer being disrupted by a pony and cart.

the forth murder was Cathrine Eddowes (also known as kate kelly) who was 46 and found in Mitre Square, Aldgate at 1:45 am. Again the throat was cut and the body was mutilated including the disappearence of her Kidney and uterus. However shortly after the murder writting was found on a wall entry of wentworth Model Dwellingings in Goulston street.
under neath was a peice of torn cloth from the victims apron and it was covered in blood.

The fifth victim was Mary Jane Kelly ( aka Marie Jeanette). she was 24 and was the only victim to have been murdered inside. She was found in number 13 Miller's Court, Dorset Stree, Spitalfields. she is suspected to have been killed between 3;30 and 4 am. this was arguably the worst of the mutilations however according to Odell there no evidence of a struggle. Again the jury's verdict was the same as all the other murders and suspects were selected but as for all the other murders no charges were brought to any suspects and as we know the killer has never been found.

I know that everyone in the group probably knows these facts but is there any major discrepences with the information you have found.

Ifiguered that if we can compare notes and facts on the blog before thursday then maybe we can find more angles to do our presentation on.
Any way i hope this information is of some use and sorry for any possible spelling mistakes its been a long day at work.

Group meeting - Jack the Ripper Facts

The group meeting the other day was really good and I've started looking at what is fact and fiction about Jack the Ripper. I found this really good book called Ripperology by Robin Odell. In the first chapter it gives specific facts about each murder and the enquiries however in parts the information can be brief.

I've checked the facts about each murder with some news websites like the bbc and i've found them 2 be accurate and i'll up load them sunday. but what found interesting was that all he murdes took place over the weekends.

The book is available on the internet but i'll bring it in on thursday. the book also incudes a section on conspiracy theories and Jack the Rippers legacy.

Oh an i've read the other weblogs and i think we are getting loads of good information so if we all have to participate in the presentation we should have enough information to split between all of us.

    Group Meeting!!!

I was really impressed with all of the things that we discussed in our group meeting!!!
I feel that everybody participated and gave extrememly good ideas overall. A good idea i think would be to separate into pairs of two with each pair concentrating on one of the three parts of our presentation:
    1. The intoduction 'what is ripperology'
    2. Fact v.s Fiction
    3. The summary of all of our points and a round up of what we found out about ripperology
I think that if we do split up into pairs then we can express our points in more detail and that way everybody will have a chance to talk and express any of their own points that they may have. Its important for us to all shine to get the best grade we can i think!!!
Other than that can i just remind everybody that whatever you find out through your research please summarise some of it on here so that we can all learn something from each others research and see if any of us come up with the same ideas.......???
Let me know what you think anyways ladies!!!

    Friday, 14 November 2008

i have E-mailed Mark as promised to ask him about the need for everyone to talk during the actual presentation, here's his reply:
Hi Theresa, it isn't absoluctely necessary for everyone to speak, but I'd advise everyone to. Even if only to deliver an introduction to the group and the topic. Or they could do anything theatrical you may choose to include. But don't have people just standing doing nothing at all for the whole thing.
    Mark

I think it may be best for each of us to take an active role in the presentation this can be done quite easily with perhaps two doing intro, two doing myth and fact game and two of us concluding the presentation? let me know what you think X

    FACT Vs. FICTION

I think that the group meeting this week went extremely well. It was good to sit and talk to group and discuss all our ideas, and I am looking forward to our final presentation.
We started the morning discussing a topic and some ideas of what we wanted to do for the presentation, but we seemed to be looking at a lot more work then we could fit into just 15 minutes. It was like a light bulb suddenly flashed above our heads when we came up with an idea that we all got really excited about. We were all really interested in the media hype surrounding the Ripper case and how modern day media seem to use the name Ripper to gain attention and we thought it would be interesting to look at the actual facts from the murders themselves, and how little there is. A lot of what we know, or think we know about Jack the Ripper has actually been fictionalized by other people. Theresa had a good idea that she wanted to look into if we had gone on the Ripper walk and that was to ask people from other countries, particularly America, if they thought that Sherlock Holmes had actually investigated the Ripper murders.
For the presentation we thought it would be good to start by quizzing our audience’s knowledge of Jack the Ripper and then go onto the aim of the presentation which would be looking at Fact Vs. Fiction.
We decided that this week we would all try to come up with a good introduction; definition of Ripperology and our aim. We also want to try to find out the basic true facts about the murders themselves, rather than what other people have predicted.

    Ripperology!!!

After all deciding all to research the TRUE facts of ripperology and get a clear definition of what and who Jack The Ripper actually was, i came up with the following ideas.

    • It began early hours, August 31st, 1988. At roughly 3:45 am in London's East end.

    • Mary Anne Nicholls was the first murdered woman.

    • A week later it was Annie Chapman.

    • Several weeks later, the police recieved a letter, off a unidentified person, claiming that they were the culprit, calling themself Jack The Ripper.

    • The public got hold of this and the whole moral fear began.

    • 2 Days later, Elizabeth Stride was murdered and the ame night Catherine Eddows was murdered also.

    • The final crime was on November 9th. Mary Kelly, who was three months pregnant, was the first of the women to get murdered inside a house.

Jack The Ripper's identity is still not clarified as nobody actually saw him. However, many people have identified him as an middle class gentleman, being a doctor as he carried a doctors bag, wore a black cloak and a black hat.

I really enjoyed meeting up as a group. We all had good points and believe that our presentation will be great fun. Thanks guys. i am going to keep searching on ripperology anyway and will keep you posted. Thanks

    Do we want to know??

After yesterday, meeting up as a group, we decided to focus on the hype reguarding Jack The Ripper and how if we found out who Jack the Ripper actually was, then all of this would be lost. So do wereally want to know? I believe that his actual name 'Jack The Ripper' is the main hype, as whenever we hear about a new murder, his name is most of the time mentioned. Not many people actually know who he is but certainly, everybody knows of the name.

    Eureka!!!!!!!!!!

    What a session!
After getting together with the girls this morning I am really pleased with the progress made. Just sitting around chatting and sharing ideas has lead to a fantastic idea for our final presentation. Every member of the group seems genuinly exited about our idea. The dynamics of the group are varied, however the various strenghts and weeknesses within the group are complementing each other well. For example, Iam the first to admit that I tend to say a lot more that is really needed to make a point, I also brain storm out loud, announcing every idea I have, good or bad. At no point did any of the girls make me feel that my ideas were wrong, everything was taken into concideration in a polite and effective way, with swift elimination of less promising ideas until the Eureka moment arrived!
We have decided to investgate how much actual FACT is known about the events and how much MYTH has become entangled with these facts. The actual evidence still in existance is minimal so perhaps it is the myths that keeps Ripperologists interested in the crimes?
We have decided that a way to prove this is by testing the rest of the group by giving them a selection of FACTS and MYTHS and seeing if they can identify which is which. This will effectivley establish how easily the myths become a "true" slice of the Ripper pie!

For our next meeting each member of the group needs to research a full definition of Ripperology and its beginings. Did the interest in Jack begin before the actual evidence was in the public domain or was it based upon mainly Myth?
We can also identify evidence of FACT and MYTH that may be used in our final presentation.

    Ripperology

While trying to do some research for our presentation i came across a few things that i thought might be interesting to add into out presentation. It seems that on one of Jacks victims (kate eddows) which was the 4th victim. half of her kidney was found with a letter wrapped around it, the letter was written to the leader of a citizens group. It was a coroner who confirmed that it was Kates kidney, anyway on this web site where i found this information there was an handwriting analysis and it confirmed that the handwritting on the letter was written by a disorganised lust murderer which would definitely seem to best describe Jack The Ripper.....!

It also has another picture of a different letter sighned 'Jack The Ripper', the handwritting on this letter is different to the first and was also analysed confirming that the person who wrote this letter was a rational, educated and organised person whose actions were well thought out and planned. Just as Mark said in our first lecture the letter signed 'Jack The Ripper' was more than likely a media stunt and i think that the handwritng analysis has hit that nail on it's head. The rational description might well have been a description of a journalist/reporter!

The link for this site is,
    http://www.michelledresbold.com/Ripperology1.html

I also found out that there is a 'Whitechapel Society' this is a group formed around the basis of the murders and although they do seem somewhat interested in the murders themselves it seems like more of a gimic or something along those lines. I think this goes along with the idea that the murders arent taken seriously anymore its more of a fashion. He is a celebrity and just like all celebrities people idolise and want to know more about him even if all that they know is not 'FACT'.

    Ripperology

I did a bit of research concerning ripperology for our presentation. It is not all of it but just something to get us started and give us a little insight on ripperology. All of this information I found from a book titled 'Ripperology' by Robin Odell.

Ripperology is basically an interest in studying the crimes of Jack the Ripper. It brings up questions such as why are people still so interested in the Ripper considering he is not the world's first serial killer nor is he the most brutal one.Not only that but would the Ripper make headlines in today's society?Ripperology gives explanations and theories as to why people are still interested in the Ripper and why he appeals to public imagination. One explanation is that people are fascinated by the Ripper and are still interested in him because his identity was never revealed.Even now no one knows who the Ripper was but the public have created a stereotypical image of the Ripper.

Another explanation or theory could be that we are interested in the Ripper because of his victims. The Rippers victims have also become a part of the fascination as to why women more specifically why prostitutes? So could we have a fascination of the Ripper because of his victims?

Robin Odell also mentions that maybe because of the geographical fascination with the East End of London the fact that the area in which the Ripper did these acts of violence is the embodiment of excessive desire and violence is at the centre of civilization.

    Who Is Jack The Ripper?

In Last week’s lecture we looked at a series of film clips taken from Jack the Ripper Films. Although it is a tragedy, for a few murders that happened over 100 years ago; it has had such a lot of media attention. This could be down to the fact that people interpret the murders to represent something much more than death. Although the identity of the murderer has never been discovered a global iconography has been invented; people assume that the murders were committed by a middle-class man and that he wore a cape, top hat and carried a doctor’s bag. The notion of the Ripper being middle-class has come to represent the class-struggle in society; he represents the upper more professional classes and the murders show the influence and power they have over the working-class. All the films viewed in last weeks lecture; whatever decade they were set all contained this iconography of the Ripper.

Last weeks lecture was helpful to help us understand how the Ripper was and still is viewed in society. As we are looking at the phenomenon of ripperology it was good to see the different representations of who the Ripper was. Although we didn’t do much group work, we decided to go off independently and look at what Ripperology is and all come up with some ideas to base our presentation on; what to look specifically at.

I think that whole spectacular surrounding Jack the Ripper is because he is unknown; people want to know more.

    Who was Jack the Ripper?

Since the very first murder in 1888 no one has known who actually committed the killing in White chapel. Last Thursday we watched several film clips, each with a different Jack the Ripper Scenarios, granted the most famous and well known is the theory behind the movie. From Hell. which suggests that the royal family were in some way linked to the Murders because the heir to the throne, Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence had father a baby by a suspected Prostitute.

Although this seems to be the most popular and accepted possibility is it really that hard to believe that it wasn't just some ordinary person, maybe middle or lower class, on a psychopathic power trip with the desire to kill and mutilate women for a reason unknown. I mean in today's society prisons are filled with people like this, killing because they want to regardless of who there victims are.

sorely there were people like this back in the 19th century. I mean there are people like Fred West, Ian Huntley, Ted Bundy, Peter Sutcliff, the moors murders and Shipman some of whom were trusted and or impersonated people of trust. Much the same as Jack the ripper did impersonating a Doctor.

Any why with all the problems with around the globe with democracy and leadership would the royal family really take such a risk to kill with such ruthlessness it attracted such a massive media frenzy. It just doesn't deem right?

Jack the Ripper has to be someone else sorely. I think that the royal family conspiracy theory was born out of a period of possibly revolution and not fact. The truth is we don;t know who it was, why suspected prostitute were targeted, or why the ripper stopped?

Can we really make such accusations based on no facts. God knows who Jack the Ripper was but i think this lack of knowing ids going to keep Jack the Ripper alive for years to come and I don't doubt there will be several more conspiracy theories to come.

    "Ripper's" impact on society

After looking at the videos in yesterday's lecture it was obvious that Jack the Ripper represented someone from the middle or upper class because of his image in each video we saw.E.g hat, cloak and doctors bag. The public were afraid of this serial killer but what got me thinking is that could the ripper in a sense be representing the power and control that the upper class has over the lower or working class.I thought that the ripper could be a representation of the more dominant class at that time.Another thing that struck me was that the newspapers were also so involved in creating this fear and in a way helping the "Ripper's" ( upper class's) position in allowing him to have a control on society by being feared by the public.

    Jill the Ripper?

Doing some research on who Jack the Ripper actually was, I came across one interesting site which talks about the identity of the serial killer and if the killer was a man. This got me thinking of how the public has always had a preconceived notion about "Jack the Ripper" and why the idea of the serial killer being a woman is less convincing to the public. In my opinion I think we find it easier to believe that Jack the Ripper was a man because of the assumption and possibly the fact that by nature men are more violent. Therefore such brutal murders and this act of violence would have been committed by a male. But some have challenged this idea in saying that "Jack the Ripper" just might have been a woman.
